# Installation & Updates

> System requirements, installation instructions, and automatic update settings.

## Start from zero

Install the Agent Skill first and ask Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor to detect your system, select and verify a package, and help install and launch the app:

```bash
npx skills add https://metrix.bar
```

Or install the app manually first, then follow the [Agent guide](/docs/agents.md) to connect. If already installed, launch it rather than reinstalling. Installation requires your consent; handle system authorization yourself.

## Download and install

Use the [download page](https://metrix.bar/download) to choose a GUI package matching your OS and CPU, including its minimum OS requirement. Prefer Stable; choose Preview only explicitly. If Stable has no matching package, decide whether to use Preview rather than switching automatically. The [release index](https://downloads.agili.app/metrix-bar/release-info.json) provides current assets and SHA-256 checksums.

- **macOS**: Choose an Apple silicon, Intel, or compatible Universal DMG. Open it, copy the actual app to Applications or your user Applications directory, and launch it. Current builds require macOS 12 or later; honor the selected package's requirement.
- **Windows**: Choose the matching architecture's NSIS `.exe` installer, complete the standard interactive installation, then launch from the Start menu. Do not guess silent flags.
- **Linux**: Choose a matching `.deb` or `.tar.gz`. Use a desktop package installer for DEB; extract tar.gz into a new user-owned directory, retain companion resources, and run its `metrix-bar` executable. GTK 3 and a desktop session are required; DEB also requires its declared dependencies. Tray icons use the session D-Bus and require a StatusNotifierItem host (on GNOME, enable an AppIndicator extension); no Ayatana AppIndicator library is required. If the tray is unavailable, settings remain accessible. Use the tray menu’s Open action when your desktop does not forward primary clicks.

The [Skill installation reference](https://metrix.bar/.well-known/agent-skills/metrix-bar/references/installation.md) has platform-specific operations and checksum checks. Do not bypass OS protection or elevate privileges without authorization.

Once running, open **Settings → Agent**, enable **Enable local API**, and confirm **Running**. Send **Copy Prompt** to your agent so it uses the actual local address and token. Health needs no authentication; follow it with an authenticated dashboard list to verify access. See the [Agent guide](/docs/agents.md).

### Locale Support

The user interface is in English. All user input values, panel titles, text nodes, and external API responses fully support Unicode and CJK characters.

## Software Updates

Metrix.Bar ships with a built-in updater that checks the release feed and installs signed update packages.

### Update Settings

Open the settings window (menu bar icon → **Settings**) and scroll to **Updates**:

- **Channel**: Choose `Stable` for regular releases or `Preview` for early builds. Switching channels checks immediately.
- **Schedule**: Choose `Manually`, `Hourly`, `Daily`, or `Weekly` between automatic checks. The default is `Daily`.
- **Check for updates**: Perform an immediate check against the release feed, whichever schedule is set.

When an update is available, click **Install update**, then **Restart to finish update**. The **Download from website** button opens the download page for your channel if you prefer a manual install.
